Geez, Gary, you're picking turnpoints from the South Australian state gliding championships official turnpoint list :-)

Count me in, only I'll consider doing it at 2000 on account of my brickish glide capability. No sense increasing risk for the sake of a game.

Trying to talk a TAFE aviation student into the right seat.
10 Aug 2011 @ 22:24
Come to think of it, last time I was at Wanbi I was in a glider below 1000' trying to get back to YWKI. That took rather longer than I wanted! Anyway, been there, done that.
12 Aug 2011 @ 20:28
I will be goin with 3 pax see you all there...... Cheers Gary Wiliams
12 Aug 2011 @ 20:32
Cant miss this one I have arranged for Karl from Gawler to accompany me as a great x country event and add some hours to my log, also have booked a jab from the club at Gawler, cant wait for this one
12 Aug 2011 @ 22:13
I'll be there in the Sporty, likely with Kevin Harris in the passenger seat.
12 Aug 2011 @ 22:22
Ground Crew Reporting!

Will be there!
13 Aug 2011 @ 11:03
Ollie and I are driving the van up. Ruth has already booked a seat. we have room for more if anyone is interested. first in best dressed
14 Aug 2011 @ 8:52
At the Adel soaring club yesterday and there is a fair bit of interest brewing for this type of event. Mike from Murry bridge is also keen to re-arrange things and try to get there as well with some students. Think we might make time to get together at Gawler for a wiz wheel brush up if anyone shows interest.(a few have mentioned they wold like a brush up on Track errors and closing angles heading changes ect for 1 n 60's. I am happy to organize if there is interest. Re the height to fly. MArk I concur that you prefer to fly at 2,000 feet. People can fly at any height they want as pilot in command. HOWEVER this is an air exercise and the exercise is as mentioned in the initial blurb...deteriorating weather.lowering cloud base ect and to do that we need to do it at a low level in order to buid our skill set. I in fact initially planned to do it at 500 feet. Still no one is insisting here. We will be meeting and briefing at Murray bridge with some instructors offering tips. The main thing is that you pilots and ground crew have a great time. DId you pick up on the date???? SEPT 11........still nothing sinister here. Good to see that we have some socal members coming as well MAndy eg
14 Aug 2011 @ 8:57
Breaking news! I will have room in the chopper for some pilots who would like to plan and fly the return trip to Murray bridge. I am taking Lorelie, Mandy and Lynda (micks wife up to Loxton) Yeah know....I chopper full of blondes...still whos complaining? I mentioned that perhaps Lorelie and her Girl friends might like to drive back in the van with a bottle of giggle juice (champagne). So if Ollie or Kristin or both would like to fly the exercise back let me know. I have 3 seats avaiable for 3 pilots. Gary
14 Aug 2011 @ 8:59
Kristin, a thought here. IF the girls do the return trip in the van you will have to consider that cos' you guys are... THE LOAD MASTERS!
14 Aug 2011 @ 19:23
Just found you guys through our CFI at Gawler. I've been keen to get our pilots together for social flights too. Your dead reckoning ex sounds great. If you do put on the wiz wheel brush up I'll be there. Looking forward to meeting you.
14 Aug 2011 @ 20:55
Hi Gary...Thanks for your comments ..Yeah the Whiz wheel brush up is attracting some attention. If you would like to call me 0413744200 I would be happy to discuss the exercise with you. Thanks Gary
14 Aug 2011 @ 21:15
Done. I have one of our club Jabiru's booked for 11 Sept. So that's two from Adelaide Soaring Club. I'm hoping we can get a few more Gawls out there to share the day with you guys!
15 Aug 2011 @ 9:02

15 Aug 2011 @ 19:14
Mike Chapman CFI murray bridge is happy for pilots from Gawler to fly his aircraft if they are suitably competant. Thanks Mike. I guess Karl could comment here on the pilots from Gawler competancy? Either way if you are from Gawler and need an aircraft you better move quickly. Check with Mike on the hourly rate as well. Cheers Gary
16 Aug 2011 @ 19:27

Going from Murray Bridge with Mike the CFI in the Jab 160. See you all there!
17 Aug 2011 @ 12:25
Land vehicle Ollie and Kristin, I am suggesting that you guys pick up the van early on the Sat morning and depart for Loxton around 0830 hrs. Are you ok with that? Suggest you meet me around 0800 at my block. You will be towing the Assured BBQ trailer with drinks. Anyone else that is going with them will need to be at my block by 0800 as well. I will not be able to hang around waiting for late arrivals due to my involvement at the Murray bridge departure point. Thanks all
17 Aug 2011 @ 12:27
Don't you mean Sunday morning, Gary?
17 Aug 2011 @ 13:14
Good to see someone is on top of it!....SUNDAY MORNING! (thanks Bas)
17 Aug 2011 @ 15:44
Sounds great guys. We've booked a J160 from Gawler, so looking forward to meeting everyone for a great day!!!!!
18 Aug 2011 @ 10:29
Looking forward to the challenge and scenery from the cockpit of the Sporty. Will be great to meet new members and must try and organise a quick fly in a Jab. At this stage i will be attending the WizWheel brushup, so see some of you there.
18 Aug 2011 @ 18:51
For those interested in the whiz wheel brush up....WHAT FLIGHT COMPUTERS ARE YOU USING? I will be working with the Cr2 or Cr3 circular ones - as they are the most practicle for in flight situations for me. Peraps bring your instructions with you
18 Aug 2011 @ 22:12
A thought to all attending pilots, crew as well as social members? We will need to take a head count to establish number for catering on the day for the barbecue lunch and soft drinks, A suggestion that we each contribute $10 perhaps per head to cover the catering and any leftover money we donate to the Assured Foundation for assistance to cancer kids . It would not cost us much at all as Gary is kindly donatingbhis van and barbecue trailer, and what a nice jesture it would be for the foundation children. I would appreciate all your thoughts to this please.
19 Aug 2011 @ 18:50
Its great to see so much interest in this event. All of our Jabirus are now fully Booked, but if anyone is interested in trying a new type or starting there Low Performance Endorsment there is one seat remaining in our Sky Fox Gazelle with Senior Instructor Paul Smith.

Looking forward to seeing you all there Mike Chapman. (P.S.we have a classic car and BBQ day This Sunday at 12.00) Regards Mike.
20 Aug 2011 @ 4:40
I did the nav today with Mik H in the chopper. It is a great route to test your dead reckoning skills and the terrain is very friendly as well. The only part that has a little tiger country is around copeville however for a brief period only. There are two waypoints that will test your belief in time and track. We will discuss at the debrief. You are allowed to use your gps as a DME as long as it is set to a page that does not show a map, otherise, What's the point. Remember that forecast winds and actual winds are two different things. We planed two one in sixty spots Chucka bend and Lake Bonney however we were on track for both. Remember that this air exercse in not madandory and if this is you see you at Loxton. Please try not to be late for the briefing at Murray Bridge BTW. This event has published times for the days activities so please try and adhere to them thank you. IF you are serious about dead reckoning..YOU WILL LOVE THIS EXERCISE.. The next get together at the Roulettes is Sun 4th at 1700hrs (fathers day) and we will be discussing our next excercise and fly away. See you then?
23 Aug 2011 @ 13:52
I have now booked the Sky Fox Gazelle and along with Paul Smith, out of Murray Bridge. I look forward to flying along side(or slightly behind) you all to Loxton. Bas now has a spare seat in the Sporty from Murray Bridge to Loxton and return, let him know if your interested.
25 Aug 2011 @ 21:14
GO OR NO GO. Bas and I will discuss at 0700 on the morning of the 11th after considering the weather and will post an email to pilots@aeroscene.com.au.EITHER WAY. If you haven't got access to emails at that particular time. Please call Gary on his mobile. Please remember that the pilot in command makes the final decision to go. Mick can you get a list of aircraft and crew of each aircraft that are going please?. Thanks Gary
25 Aug 2011 @ 21:39
Hi all the time is getting close now so we will need a head count to finalize the numbers as well as the catering for the barbecue , so if you can all please let me know who is coming, I will need names of pilots and crew, as well as aircrafts firstly as this is a basic requirement so we can do a head count at all stops and airstrips for safety, we don't want to have anyone left behind, and also we can make sure everyone is accounted for. If your co ping along by car or support vehicles please let me know your numbers and names as well. Please email me at mickh@adam.com.au as soon as you all can. Any questions at all? You can call me on 0418831790 as well.

Thanks all.
26 Aug 2011 @ 13:42
Looking forward to it! Me n Steve are flying in the Jabiru J160 - 4814 from Gawler!

See you there! :D
28 Aug 2011 @ 10:26
Hi Gary and fellow flyers, hoping to catch with you all(fingers crossed) for the Loxton Flyin. Gary, sorry for the late response to your email the other week, lots been happening and no I haven't been flight training of late (last lesson was over 15mths ago :(! All Fly and Keep Safe........Cheers Alley
28 Aug 2011 @ 22:35
In regards to your planning, please ensure that you call Loxton at the appropriate distance and plan to be overhead at 1,500 AGL.( work out your climb from your cruise height of 1,000 agl) We want to be seen a pro aviators...No bardging in at low level... Many thanks
29 Aug 2011 @ 17:13
Getting closer and most numbers are in now however if there are any late comers for Loxton please dont hesitate to drop me a line and register, mickh@adam.com.au At the moment the count is 15 aircraft and 31 passengers, crew and ground crew. this will be an amazing event, lets all pray for nice weather to be on our side eh!
29 Aug 2011 @ 20:03
A point to consider is that some of the waypoints don't appear on a wac chart. I am using a ADEL VNC. I have setup one in sixy calcs at "chuck a bend" on the river" to get an idea of the drift heading out. The other I used was Lake bonney between Renmark and Holder. As previously mentioned there are two waypoints that you won't see until you are over them so trust your DR....I mean that's the point of the exercise isn't it? Looks like this event is gaining good momentum. Cheers Gary
1 Sep 2011 @ 11:44
Graham & Louise Barrington will be taking our J230 to the Loxton challenge.
2 Sep 2011 @ 14:37
It all sounds very exciting and I wish I could come but unfortunately I have to work and can't get out of it however an very interested in any future events of this nature - as a recently qualified RA Aus pilot I would love the oppotunity to fly with others and gain from their experience. Hope you all have a great time
3 Sep 2011 @ 6:55
Guys if you are thinking of attending anything that is posted please use this site to let us know. EG some people let me know that they were attending the whiz wheel brush up on Sat the 3rd. I let those people know that it would have to change to Sun the 4th due to reasons that arent important here. I heard through the grapevine that someone who had not let me know they were coming was looking forward to the Whizzy wheel brush upon Sat. I wont be there - sorry but if they had let me know via ths site under this post I would have called them as I did the others. So guys, to save future embarassment please let us know. Another situation that would be handy for us to know about is the Sun monthly meetings. If you let us know that you will be attending we can reserve a seat for you as well as a place for dinner. Great to see that we have 19 aircraft so far for Loxton. 'ave a great day . Gary
4 Sep 2011 @ 20:07
Thanks Gary for an informative session today on the whiz wheel. I can see the advantage of the pocket-size CR2 over my E6-B (B for Beast). The rotating plotter looked handy too. Out of the two you showed, which one do you like best and why?
5 Sep 2011 @ 11:40
Hello there (again) Up date to the weekend away for Sept 11.. Weather so far is looking ok...fingers crossed. BBQ - We are NOW using the facilities from Loxton. They have suggested we use their facilities $12 per head. they have a chef as well.(cant compete with that - we've only got Ollie...lol) So, less organizing for us! great. Ollie its just the van no trailer.See you at the block at 0800 Morning and afternoon tea will be provided at Murray bridge - for brief and de-brief. A few dollars will be required to cover this as well. As it is a flying event which will have a brief and a de-brief we are encouraging you to complete the exerecise by ending up at to murray bridge so that we can discuss the flying side and the event side of the day. Those that arrive back first will grab a cup of tea/coffee and enjoy the arrivals/multiple arrivals of other pilots groups.Things that we will discuss are- "what went wrong for you?" "How did you handle it"? "What was positive and what was negative about the event"? to name but a few. Don't forget the go/no go times and method of communication that is listed at the beginning of this event Thankyou Gary
5 Sep 2011 @ 11:47
I have a seat available in the Sporty for a sub 90KG person from Murray Bridge.

(I already have a passenger between Gawler and YMBD)

Let me know if you want it or know someone who does!
5 Sep 2011 @ 20:21
Hi all. Just a quick note to let everyone know that I'll be joining Ollie and Kristin in the van this weekend. It's a bit last-minute but I'm assuming Ollie's OK'd this with the relevant people so hopefully it's not an issue. I'm really looking forward to Sunday. It'll be great to catch up with those of you I've met and a great chance meet some new people. Cheers, Nick.

9 Sep 2011 @ 20:24
yes it does, unless the weather is slightly bad, in which case Reg will pull out. If that happens, I'll give you a call sun morning to see if it's still available.

thanks again!

This is what to expect tommorrow. MURRAY DISTRICT Saturday : Cloudy with isolated showers about the southwest Murraylands, extending throughout during the afternoon. Cool with moderate southwesterly winds.

TOWNS AND CITIES for Saturday. Renmark 17 Possible shower. Murray Bridge 15 Shower or two.

FOLLOWING THREE DAYS : Sunday : Isolated showers. Cool with light to moderate south to southwesterly winds. Will post go/no go by 0700 tommorrow. Thinking the worst will be low cloud and aircraft not getting to Murray bridge in time.(hopefully not) If this is the case I will post the instructor briefing as well on this site so that you know what is happening. See you all at Murray Bridge Gary
10 Sep 2011 @ 23:57

What a fantastic day out. Thanks for organising this event guys, and thanks to Murray Bridge and Loxton for the great reception. We had a ball!!!
12 Sep 2011 @ 9:02
Yes agree with Steven on this one. A great turn out enjoyed by all. Congrats to all you pilots and instructors. You were awesome and professional displaying commercial standard airmanship well done! Would like to see more at the debrief as that is were we all learn from others. Time to move onto our next event : Calling all Aeroscene administrators : Would like to meet up with you all one night this week. Thinking Wed or thur. The first thing will be to load all photos from the Loxton event for all to see. Ollie, Gary have photos to load. Please advise asap thanks Guys Gary
12 Sep 2011 @ 20:30
Congrats to Loxton Aero Club on being such wonderful hosts and to Gary for organising this event. A dead reckoning exercise like this reinforces all your navigation wits, like using your ETI as an accurate check of whether you've reached or overflown your waypoint. I've seen so many students, myself included, rely entirely on visual cross referencing map to ground such that they convince themselves they know where they are by "forcing" the ground scenery to match the map. Meantime their clock ticks along telling them if they bothered to use it that they are still a minute or 2 short of the waypoint and no need to panic. For Kevin and me, having separately prepared our own flight plans, it was great reinforecement comparing headings, distances, GS and ETI as we went, never more than 1-2 miles off track despite dodging showers. Funnily enough our worst performance was one of the shortest, YLOX - YREN, when we nearly ended up at Paringa! Never lost though!!! Also good practice avoiding other a/c enroute a couple of times, talking to each other to ensure at least one a/c could see the other. Looking forward to another one if my weekend time permits, especially to bring my wife. Cheers everyone.
12 Sep 2011 @ 21:09
I can speak on behalf of all of the Loxton Aero Club Members who were at the Airfield on Sunday - we LOVED having you all!! Of course Roger and I would like to, once again, give a big slap on the back as a 'thanks' to Gary for the chopper ride. An unbelievable experience. I got some fantastic, absolutely fantastic photos from the air. Would you like copies of the best of them? If I knew more about discussion groups I would know how to dump them right here! We look forward to you all returning to Loxton and as I said before, Roger and I look forward to joining you in the New Year when our plane is in the air. Best wishes, Kerrie and Roger.
12 Sep 2011 @ 21:22
Thankyou both for your comments. ALso Thanks to Bas, Mick and group captain Ollie (in charge of ground op's)...for their invaluable help in organizing a rather simple but effect day. You are all awesome. The aeroscene team are all about returning pilots to having fun with each other..as well as learning from each other....Kerry please send your pics to garyw@assuredhomeloans.com.au and I will post them when we meet on wed evening to discuss our November event. Thankyou Gary
13 Sep 2011 @ 8:00
Thanks everyone for coming and the teams at MDB and LOX for organising things there; it made everything run so smooth!

Had a great time doing the DR exercise, good to practice! Bit of friendly rivalry going on (don't imagine it anything more than that) and good to see everyone made it without getting lost. Uhm, I mean "uncertain of position".

I think next time we can make it harder Gary - I know you love using stations and antennas as waypoints instead of towns! :)

Just wondering if it was neccesary for 3 aircraft in the space of 10 minutes arriving at Gawler to ask ATC if R233A/B were active, that's sure to get on their nerves, right? One even said "also requesting", as if they heard the call from the aircraft before them... R233A (SFC-2500) would shut down YGAW completely and I wonder if any of us will see it activated in our lifetimes, especially with no notice. Correct me if I am wrong!

Everything else looked like good safe flying to me, looking forward to doing it again!
13 Sep 2011 @ 11:43
Jon and I had a great time going home. Dam Wall was obscured by a wall of black. Comms with Parafield tower and a Chipmunk who went through a few minutes earlier suggested that it was very heavy rain but still VMC, but it didn't feel like it to me so we turned back to Warren Reservoir and circled off to one side near the fire tower for a few minutes to see if it'd clear.

It looked like it was, so we had another go, but it thickened again as we pulled close. Another turnback, another pause for reflection...

ATC said the military restricted areas were all deactivated except for the Edinburgh control zone, so we went around the back of the hills, across to Roseworthy, then skirted the northern edge of the control zone on the way to Mallala and Dublin so we could arrive coastal via Outer Harbour. Couldn't see Gawler at all through the murk, I have no doubt it was the right decision.

And I think Jon learned a fair bit about weather diversions.

Excellent day. Must do more of it.
13 Sep 2011 @ 12:52
Well it was a great day for sure!

What a great turnout and was good to meet a few new faces. I enjoyed the drive up from Parafield, but I would have loved to have flown! (Who wouldn't?) So need to get my butt in gear and get my PPL current again!

I did take few photos but not as many as I would have liked – I think next time it would be cool to get each group of people and have a picture of them in front of the aircraft that got them to the event. I will sort through what I do have tonight and post the ones that turned out well, so keep an eye out for the Gallery.

Like Gary said, it would have been nice to see a few more faces at the Roulettes. Obviously it’s not suitable for everyone but it’s always nice to close the day with a meal and a 'Glass of Water'.

Looking forward to the next event and hope to see you all again plus more!

Thank you all for attending, hope you all enjoyed!
13 Sep 2011 @ 17:01
Thank you so much for a wonderful day! :-) All involved put in 110%; and it showed!!!

The weather was a bit interesting at times, but we made it through!

Waiting in anticipation for the next event!!!

Cheers, Cats!
13 Sep 2011 @ 18:14
Hi everyone, Just a quick one to say that I really enjoyed myself on Sunday. It was great to catch up with old friends and meet new people. Thanks to Ollie for the incredibly safe drive up to Loxton (Gary, he nursed the van like a baby), to anyone involved with organizing the event and to Gary for an amazing flight back in the chopper. "Watch out fo' mah black a**!"

Cheers, Nick.
14 Sep 2011 @ 14:53
Another happy customer here. I also reiterate what Paul said regarding trusting your planning and cross check with whats outside. Obvioulsy I found doing a nav at 1500ft rather than 4500ft quite challenging visually, esp in unknown teritory, so more learnt there. Was fantastic to try my hand in the J230 and appreciate the view, speed, comfort (and of course the cost) as oppossed to the C172. Hope to return back to that seat again soon! Overall an overwhelming success with great food (and who could forget those cupcakes), company, whilst learning and having a few laughs. Not to mention making some money for the clubs and charity. For those wondering, Paringa seems a great little spot!
14 Sep 2011 @ 14:57
Louise & I had an enjoyable day. First time Louise had navigated & preferred it to just sitting there while I have all the fun. I have only just got back into flying & was a bit rusty on navs but a bit of swotting & it all came back. Sorry we missed the debrief but we had another engagement. Congratulations on a well organized event.

cheers
15 Sep 2011 @ 12:53
